What is Schedule 1 in form 2290?

When you do the payment for Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT), IRS will provide proof of payment as Schedule 1 copy. IRS will provide you one copy of Schedule 1 and keep one copy with them for record purposes.

What is the use of Schedule 1?

  • To run/operate your heavy vehicle on any public highway.
  • To report all vehicles for which you are reporting tax.
  • To report an increase in taxable gross weight.
  • To report suspension of the tax by category.
  • To report Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • Verify payment of Highway Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT).
  • To claim refund for overpaid tax dues on your taxable vehicle.
  • To lease or contract your truck.
  • To renew your vehicle registration.

What are the requirements for Schedule 1?

  • Your Employer Identification Number (EIN). You must have an EIN to file Form 2290. You cannot use your social security number.
  • Business name.
  • First Used month of the vehicle.
  • The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).
  • The taxable gross weight to determine its category.

How do you get your Schedule 1 copy?

When you e-file your HVUT you will pay by direct debit method (EFW) or through EFTPS, the IRS receives the payment information and then they will verify the information in their database and if found right you will be sent with an email containing the Schedule 1 copy as proof of payment. This is referred as IRS e-file watermark, it is nothing but IRS will stamp their e-file logo and the date your return was received and processed by them. The electronic copy will show this watermark and accepted by all DOT’s, DMV’s and other federal authorities.
Note: Motor carriers with 25 or more vehicles subject to HVUT are required to report the IRS electronically and additional sheet of Schedule 1 should be attached, we will take care of this in our e-file software.
If your Schedule 1 copy does not have an IRS watermark logo, you will be validated.

How long does it take to get Schedule 1 copy?

It depends on how you e-file your HVUT. If you file your tax with epay2290 you will get Schedule 1 copy within minutes. If you choose to file your HVUT by paper method then it takes upto 6 weeks for the IRS to process it.

Who should have stamped Schedule 1?

Anyone who owns and operates motor vehicle that has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more should have a stamped Schedule 1.


How does stamped Schedule 1 look like?

A copy of Schedule 1 is a proof of payment and is received once the tax is paid by the tax payer and verified by the IRS. The Stamped Schedule 1 copy will have a visible Watermark with received date on it.

What happens if stamped Schedule 1 is lost?

If you have e-filed your HVUT with epay2290, you can download a fresh copy of your stamped Schedule 1 once again by logging into your account.
If you filed by paper method you need to contact the IRS and request a replacement stamped Schedule 1, but it takes time to process the request and replace the document.

Is stamped Schedule 1 required for suspended vehicle(s)?

Even though you are not required to pay tax for your suspended vehicle(s), you still have to file your Form 2290 and collect the IRS stamped Schedule 1 copy for renewing the vehicle(s) tag.
